28. Do you need a CDL to be a heavy equipment operator? If so, how much does the CDL cost?
Asked by Smile Everyday
And is there any way to waive the CDL?

A:
Best Answer:
Commercial Drivers License is required for operation of ALL trucks over 26,000 GVW and ALL buses and vehicles that transport more than 15 passengers including the driver. Some construction companies require a CDL-A so that the operator can also transport the heavy machinery from one work site to another. Just to be a operator of heavy machinery, no. Having one (CDL-A) could be a definite plus when working for a company in this line of business. CDL-A license can cost from $4000 to $6000 range. Beware of schools that will take your money and leave you with little hands on training. Get all the endorsements on your license if possible as well. This means $$$ to your paycheck. The Hazmat endorsement for example is becoming one of the most valuable since less and less drivers want to obtain one and keep it current. The school website below can prove helpful to you. This school will give you the best of the best training for your money. They will give you the most personal attention of any school while training.

Unless the equipment is going to be driven on public highways, no. A CDL is mainly for vehicles that transport people and goods. But to be safe check woith your local licensing authority. Good Luck!
