How much math should a person know to work for a tax return or bookkeeping firm?

It's not so much math, as accounting.
To do those jobs and UNDERSTAND what you are doing and the affect it has, you need to take accounting classes.
At the bare minimum I would suggest college level Accounting I & II.
20+ years accounting and business management (non-degreed)

As long as you can add, subtract, multiply, and divide, you can do tax returns and/or bookkeeping. You don't need to know trigonometry, calculus, or differential equations.

The questions is, how knowledgeable are you in Tax Research and Planning and what is your background in Accounting? To answer your question, you should be able to perform basic mathematical computations, i.e. addition, subtraction, etc. If you're contemplating a career in Accounting, be prepared for extensive coursework in Mathematics, that is, if you're looking for a career and not just an $8.00 an hour job.

You'd only need enough to be able to work a calculator.
It's not as if anyone there actually does the math anyway...it's all computerized these days.

It's NOT the math......bookkeeping is no more than addition, subtraction, multiplication and division........5th grade stuff.

Since I work in accounting and deal with taxes, I will let you know that the math skills are pretty basic. Aside from the basics, you should be able to calculate percentages. The math is not the big concern, however, the accounting principles are the focus.
Also, concerning the answer above that says everything is computerized and we don't do the math....that is not true. In every system, items are keyed in. One wrong stroke and your total is off. Guess who has to do the math to find the mistake??
