What are the ups and downs of being a server?
Asked by mpress7
I just got a job at a steakhouse restaurant as a server and this will be my first time being one. What are the good and bad parts of being a server and how much money could I expect to make working 4 or 5 days a week?

The service industry isn't really one where you can predict exactly how much you'll make working a specific amount of times. It fully depends on how busy the restaurant is, how you're doing, etc. Tips can be good, but they can also be terrible, it depends fully on the type of people you serve. Another bad thing is you'll get a lot of bull from people. People will be rude to you for no reason. Granted, you'll also get lovely people who tip you loads. It's a mixed bag.

It depends how how nice you are. It is good to go over and ask after 5 minutes is everything is OK. You make your money of tips. It depends on if they have liquor there..too

I have been serving since I was 13 and really the $ depends on the customer and how well of a day your having... I mean if your having a bad day and you let it show... then that'll reflect on your tip. Plus if you work in a place thats not steady all the time, your tips will be less. It also all depends on how much you make hourly on how much you'll actually bring home a week or whatever. I loved serving, but sometimes the people are killer and the hours are long. You just always wear a smile and write stuff down, don't try to memorize it... that is so annoying and how you jack it up.... I always write my stuff down and I have seen more servers mess up orders because they forgot and just guessed so they didn't have to go back to the table and ask again.... have fun at your new job!!!! and Good Luck!!
