I'm not a coal miner but I know a little about it. While conditions have improved over the decades, it is still a very dangerous and dirty job. Working underground is not for everyone and while the temperature is fairly constant, it is usually damp and cramped. Black Lung disease is still a real possiblity despite improved conditions. On the positive side, pay tends to be good considering the local economy and the country still needs lots of coal each year. The miners are hard working people who almost always want their children to have a non-mining job. Mike Honeycutt
