How do I get my boss to get me an assistant?
Asked by kay j
I'm overworked and I need an assistant. What is the best way to present my case to my boss? Are there somethings I should know before asking for an assistant? What are the does and don'ts of asking for an assistant. Thanks.

A couple of thoughts:
1. Who is the actual decision maker? For example, is it your boss, or your boss's boss? Carefully consider your audience (the ultimate decision maker).
2. If this is a small business, and your boss is the owner of the business, then it all boils down to dollars and cents:
A. How much will the assistant cost? Consider all the factors, both wages to the assistant, taxes, benefits, and the effort to recruit a good one.
B. How much will business profit increase from this assistant? If the answer is zero (you'll be less overworked, but the same amount of business is happening) then why would you boss go for it? On the other hand, if the assistant costs $1000 per month, but makes profits go up by $2000, then it's a pretty easy decision, isn't it.
In general, state your case in terms of the improved business success - related as closely as possible to actualy business success: revenue/profit.
