Career Questions and Answers
what kind of jobs can i get doing social work?
Asked by S.Co
i want a career in the future that allows me to help other people who are less fortunate, so social work seems fitting. at the same time, i don't want to be the one that takes a child away from an unfit parent or anything depressing like that. or maybe i shouldn't do social work at all and try something else. any suggestions?

You would only take kids out of the home if you worked for child welfare. However, social workers do work with social problems and as a result there is heartache...however there are also many heartwarming experiences. I would encourage you to do some volunteer work (for example in a shelter or charity). Get a sense of your passion and see if it fits.

My wife has an MSW (Masters in Social Work) and works as a social worker for Hospice. She never thought she could do that but has come to love the job.
She is not taking children away from unfit parents, but she does help families cope with the dying process.
Remember, you are never going to become rich as a social worker. Your reward comes in different ways.
Bless you for what you are wanting to do.

Well then you know you don't want to work in chlid welfare agencies if you're adverse to taking children away from parents, although look at it another way, you're protecting that child from people who should protect that child but due to drugs, alcohol, mental health problems, incest etc aren't able to or fit to take care them. It's better for the child's mental and emotional growth to be taken away from risky situations. Although foster care isn't always the best situation either.
Other areas for social work, working in hospitals with patients, adults and children helping parents and family members cope with illness and perhaps death or placement in other situations.
Working with disabled adults and children seeing they get the adaptive technology and job skills they need.
Working within the education systems helping kids and adults get the help they need to succeed.
Working a social agencies dealing with the poor and underprivileged.
Working at rehab facilities like the VA or chldren's rehab facilities.
I'd check with your university human resources dept as well as your employment agencies to see what is available for social workers in your area or elsewhere.
