Yes, you need a commercial pilot license to fly for an airline. Airline look for pilots with a degree behind them. They like to see determination and commitment. You can start by going to your local small airport and start taking lessons. Private license will cost you around $4000.00 and work your way up to get your commercial license (long time to build flight hours) or go to an academy. The academy will give you an accelerated course (in at about 10 months) toward your commercial license. You can get your flight hours in no time. Just be prepared to dish out a lot of money. You might qualify for grant or student loan going this route.
Go to your local FBO (Fixed Base Operation), at the airport and talk to people (pilots) and ask questions. You might end up talking to the right person who will help you, you can make a lot of friends this way too.

A lot of comercial airline pilots begin as pilots in the armed forces. They have such a high rate of training they are very rarely refused entry.
If you don't fancy life in the military, you can start as a civil pilot and most small airports have flying schools.

if your in the UK the easiest way is to get into the R A F. In there you,ll get all the training to fly jets and learn all about avionics in general and the best part is it,s free, in fact they,ll pay you. If your an American you can try your local sheriffs office,,,,,,sorry only joking, the U S A F should be able to glide you in the right direction.
