What's the best way to tap into the hidden job market? Many new openings are never advertised, where are they?
Asked by mac
I once read only 5% of the available jobs are advertised in either newspapers, on the internet, or free weekly shopping guides. How does one find out what jobs are out there in education, publishing, etc? It seems as if many of the jobs posted on the internet are from employment agencies and are low paying. Considering I live next door to one of the biggest cities in world, there must be a lot of job openings.

It's who you know.
If you have a lot of contacts in the field, you will hear about unadvertised openings.
That 5% figure is bull. 95% of job openings are not "hidden". If they were, most of the country would be unemployed.
Try looking at employment ads in trade publications or on association websites.

Talk to people at coffe shops, at the market, at church - pretty much anywhere.
You never know who has a friend of a friend that needs a new employee.

Go to your state employment office & register. They get many of the openings that are not advertised.
Also, check out the websites from the county, city, and the schools or publications in your area. Many companies only post openings on their own sites.
Good Luck!
