What can I do beyond a degree in architectural drafting?
Asked by devp444
I'm pursuing a degree in architectural drafting. My dream is to one day be an architect or be somewhere around this type position with this type salary - just wanna design and build. I figure this degree, which ill get fast (still young too) will help me out getting started somewhere and I can further my education later on but I'm not sure which direction to go in or what to pursue after that.

Hey there. I'm an Architectural Drafter, have my own business, and absolutely love what I do! I've been drawing for over 14 years and have had my business for almost seven years. I make a very good living, but that is because I contract (freelance) and can charge more for my services. A lot of companies are using Contract Drafters now, because it cuts down overhead (insurance, liability, and such).

If I would do anything different with my career path, I would have chosen to go into Commercial Design and Development. (I am currently in Residential). There will be a great need for Urban Development Planners and Designers and the money is a lot better.
You sound very motivated, so check into some of the Local Design Firms, perhaps even contact them to see what they have available for interns. Another suggestion. Some Architectural Firms (like other companies) have Job Opportunities listed on their Websites.
Good luck to you!
