What should I do about being bored at work all day?
Asked by xjewel903x
I work for a start up cocoa processing plant (only opened 2 months ago). So far I have little to no assign tasks. I've tried asking my bosses for more work and they say okay, but never give me any. I try to just do things around the office, but there is not much to do becuase this is a start up company. I end up surfing the web all day and even that is getting annoying. HELP.

Surfing the net isn't all bad - so put it to good use. Learn as much as you can about your industry and your company's competitors. Then, also find interesting tangents to go off of while researching these things, this adds depth of knowledge for you and for your company.
Learn as much as you can about cocoa plants as well and the economies and regions where it is grown and harvested. Also, learn all that you can about general business practices in your country, as well as abroad, especially where your company clients may be.
Then, take some of your free time, if you have any left now, and learn some other languages and international business and social customs.
You could take some higher education self-study classes that could be useful to your boss' business.
After doing all of this, you have just positioned yourself to be a more valuable employee, which hopefully in the months and years ahead can help you to grow with the company, and position you to be an indispensible part of the overall team, especially if the company grows.
If you leave this company at some point, think of the things that you can add to your resume in terms of what you did and learned from your work. Now tell me - if you were an employer and had a choice between two new employees and one did no learning and job upgrading during their tenure with their former employer and the other took the initiative to learn as much as possible - which would you want on your team??

Try to read books that can improve your knowledge and help the company out at the same time. If you haven't already, master Microsoft Offfice, master the software the company uses....and if all else failes....go to znake.com :)

You can always look for another job. Many people would love a job which they do very little and get paid for it.

I am in the same boat! Although my job has been around for a long time. I just have slow bouts where I have absoutely nothing to do but surf the internet. And thats all I do. You could be creative and try to think of things to do on your own. Or offer to help a co-worker, ask for more training so you can do other tasks, etc. Every job has its up and down days...don't always have something to do with every job.

You know what. It isn't nothing wrong with that. Enjoy yourself while you can. Once your job starts getting work for you then it would be a different story..bring a book or do some crosswords. It's easy money get it while the getting is good.

If it's a start up company there should be a MILLION things to do. It isn't like the company has a track history and is just cruising along. What about marketing for the company, public relations, etc? what is your title? Are you just a secretary? Are you in charge of a department? If it's that boring, how about looking for a new job while you're surfing the web?
