Where can I get a taste of the British fishing industry?
Asked by Rover
I know it is a failing market but it is something I would really like to experience before (call me a pessimist if you like) it is completely dead.
I would love to work as a trawlerman for a job, I think it is a hard, noble and therefore fulfilling life, but there isn't much scope for it any more. It would be great if I could work on a trawler just for a few days or weeks, just to see what the environment is like, pay homage to the men I've always admired, and be able to tell their story when I am a bearded old man.
Do you think this is a viable ambition and how can I go about pursuing it? Are trawler boat captains likely to let me work for them (unpaid) for a short amount of time?
I'd be interested to hear any sensible answers.
PS, I am based in the SW UK, I believe my nearest fishing port is Poole.
Thanks!

First try the job centre.---Maybe ring the one in Poole .Try the nearest navigation school they may have some suggestions.Look in yellow pages for ship owners and companies. You may be lucky if you go down to the quayside and enquire personallyBy the way a trawler captain is a Skipper. There is a shortage of men in the industry and many companies are employing Polish ,Latvian and Croatian men because of this. The very best of luck to you.It is a hard life .the comradeship is however awe inspiring--hard men who are the salt of the earth.

Trust me being a fisherman isnt all its cracked up to be. Ask around your local harbour or if you are really serious head up towards Peterhead or Fraserburgh. I cant see a Skipper lettting you work unpaid unless you have had experience, as the fishing is a dangerous job.
Good luck, and rather you than me.
