Whats the best career change if you add an MBA to BSC engineering?
Asked by peter w
I have recently added an MBA to a BSc in Mechanical Engineering obtained 20 years ago. Since getting the BSc in 1987 I have worked 20 years in design and management in many world class automotive companies. I added an MBA in the last 2 years and have also a successful network marketing business growing. I want to move out of engineering, and into saomething sales related or marketing or stratgey - what jump could i make with this experience - my passion is sales now.

my friend has exactly the same qualifications as you and she is now a consultant on many different projects and some of them are engineering related e.g. energy

Well, with a P. Eng , you are pretty well established, and could probably float on the strength of your resume alone(based on what you have provided as experience). Engineers often make a seamless transition into technical sales, and there are many positions available to organizations with products that have industrial customers.
Specifically if you have experience in the automotive or auto manufacturing industries, I would suggest that there are probably lots of companies head-hunting for technical sales people whose business focus is selling to auto manufacturers. Like Brooks Manufacturing or GMF Robotics Corp. This would open the door to the world of marketing and sales, without necessarily requiring the MBA - you ply the Engineering trade as your credential.
In any event, I would concentrate on seeking employment in sales with companies whose target market is an industrial one. This sounds like the group of jobs you would be best qualified for.
