What is it like to be a Viticulturist?
Asked by *crystal wish*
I'm considering taking Viticulture in Uni. I live in Perth and love the atmosphere of wineries like Margaret River. Im not old enough to have drunken many types, to become familiar with what is a good wine... but I really wanted to know what are the "Pro's and Cons" of the Job from an actual Viticulturist because it seems so interesting. I hear the pay is low but the Job Prospects overseas (esp Europe) is great... is this true?

Like you I was enchanted by the thought of working in a vinyard and making great wines, and knowing all there is to know about it. In researching the field and the University course work that led to being a ''graduated viticulturist'' I learned many things. One of the things that turned me away from it was that in school you learn a lot of bioengineering and stuff that a farmer will tell you you only need if you want to do research. The job you're envisioning is one that is best learned by farming. You can still find plenty of universities that integrate a lot of farming time in to their curiculum. But is it really necessary? No, its not.
