Has anyone worked at a call center doing customer service?
Asked by Not_yo_mama
I applied for a job at a customer service call center and now I'm wondering if it will be a good job or not. It is for a mobile phone company taking customer service calls. I'm wondering if you have to be able to take a lot of abuse on the phone? I've never done this kind of work before. Any feedback would be welcome.

Yes, I've worked at a call center before...not traditional customer service, but taking inbound calls. Yes, it is stressful and yes you will have to take a certain amount of abuse, but from my experience anyways, the kind and grateful people over whelmingly outnumber the jerks. If someone gets too far out of line, I'm sure at that point you will be instructed to hand him/her over to your manager. Good luck to you!

Yeah I worked for a mobile phone company doing customer service. I will tell you that it is a job that you can get tired of very fast. Everyday is the same thing just different people on the end of the phone. If they let you switch up, taking on different things, then you will be fine. By the time I left the call center, I was a trainer. Some people like it, some don't . I just got burned out. Good luck! :)

be prepaired to be cussed at, yelled at, sh!t on, p!ssed on and ran over. you wont even be allowed to defend yourself without getting in trouble and you have to be nice the entire time. the most you could do is hang up on someone but you have to have a legit reason because most places record the calls.

Sometimes you take abuse. But if you do, simply call the number back about 20 times. That'll learn 'em. Ooooh! Oooh! Even better: if you find out that the household actually has two or more phone numbers, call each one right after the other. They'll get tired from running up and down the stairs and will remember to be cordial next time some poor working slob calls them...

I did it for four weeks at INTUIT (the company that makes turbotax and quickbooks) and i got out. It was horrid. Arrogant people and moody ones. And youre not allowed to respond back like that. Youre better off NOT doing that kind of customer service!

I worked at the airport for a year doing "customer service" The only reason people call you is because something is wrong. A lot of the time they are angry and because you are their first point of contact, they take it out on you. You're going to have to have a lot of patience and don't take anything personally!!

I worked at Sears Telecatalog for almost 4 years when they were open. Every company has a phone abuse policy. You can ask them what their policy is. At STC we were not allowed to hang up no matter what. I learned to find humor in the ravings of upset customers. One thing that always threw them off after they took a breath was ask them what their problem was. It made them stop and think for a minute so I could take over the problem and solve it. Call and ask them what their policy is.

Yes, I worked for a call centre, for a mobile phone company B4, the money was good. However I did recieve much ridicule for being Canadian as all the calls were coming in from the states. I never knew how the Americans really felt about Canadians till I heard it from the horses mouth. Training month was real fun though; I quit my third month, signed into my computer and walked out the door to go get some tacos. Haven't looked back since. Some people really like it though, so check it out for the training period at least. By any chance is it called "COVERGYS" ???

They are going to be calling you probably with problems and you can be sure you'll be verbally abused, there are always people like that. But you will get so many calls that they'll just be another call and it won't bother you as much. I used to call people to try to sell them long distance and funny enough I don't even remember them being angry- I'm sure I must've gotten some. Then I was a payphone operator and that's where I'd get more rude and angry people. You just have to remember that it really isn't anything personal because you are just a voice on the other end and they don't know you, they are upset with their situation. Sometimes it would get to me and others I'd soon forget them. I don't think I would do it again though.

I worked at an inbound call center twice. One was for taking orders for countless products.....I HATED it. The second time, I worked in CS for a wireless company. Let me tell you, as someone who considers herself a seasoned CS Rep, one of the customers made me literally cry on my first day out of training. Its not for the weak-minded. You have to basically listen to customers yell at you and make you feel like nothing, yet as part of your job you have to turn around and STILL be kind to them and provide them service. The tough calls came 45% of the time for me, but after doing it for a couple of months the dumbness gets old. I would suggest trying it out if its just a temporary job that you're looking for and they're paying you well. Otherwise, look for something a little less stressful.
