Basically, it depends on you and what you want to do. As you stated "tool & product design engineer" I presume that you are working in plastics field. Otherwise there are many more branches as product designer or tool designer. (E.g. sheet metal, castings, forging, jig/fixtures, SPM's or machine design, etc) It is always better if you can get exposure to all or many of these branches. It gives you more freedom as a product designer. If you study the process of designing, your primary aim is to attain the function of the product properly, then comes other factors like cost, aesthetics, weight, ease of operating, etc. For this your exposure to selection of material, manufacturing process is important. Other important thing is to keep you updated with the latest & upcoming technology. It may be design / analysis software or latest development in materials. Read a lot, subscribe to magazines / newsletters keep yourself updated. So in all, if you want to continue as a design engineer, understand the design processes and apply your knowledge accordingly. You will improve day-by-day and excel. All the best.

Your future will be in the management ladder in the same field. You must setup a career planning meeting with your boss and discuss your concerns openly. For these positions, you must pay extra attention to communication, networking, problem solving, people skills and leadership. Generally read leadership and behavioural science books. At the same time, make sure you remain technically as competent as your peers.

dear, if u want to improve ur future so u have to improve ur present first. as we all know that their is boom in Indian economy so each and every field is full of prosperity and opportunity need is only to work sincerely, with open eyes,open mind.
