Is it OK for a High School teacher to have a small but visible tattoo?
Asked by GiaDess
I teach middle and highschool, and the kids don't really notice the small flower design I have on my wrist. If they do, they say "is it real?" and then go back to their work. However, I am considering wearing a watch over it, just in case a parent gets mad or something.

I am a high school teacher adn we have a lot of teachers who have tattoos. It is not a big deal.

A:
depends on the district, mine says no tat's visible, so the teacher that got her kids names on her wrists wears bandaids over them when she lacks cuffs

The only negative I see is that when a student asks his parents to get a tattoo and they say no that student will say "my teacher has one". Teach by example and hide the tattoo while working.

No. What kind of example are you setting?

Well I don't condone the act of having tattoos, due to my religious beliefs. However, I remember when I was a 10th grade, my English teacher had a small flower on her wrist. And also a rose on her chest (you could see it). So I would guess it will won't be a problem to the school administration, depending on the atmosphere of the school and its policies.

is it kind of unfair that you shoudl hide it, i mean teachers are humans too right? Although I suppose it is best to cover it up to save yourself agreviation, as you are in a profession that you have to lead by example and it's only for a few hours during the day...x

Personally, I don't like tatoos. When I was in high school my friends were getting tatoos and I really, really wanted one. I think this may have been the only time that I listened to my mom and I didn't get one. Anyway, point is..unless there is a policy about tatoos I think it is OK. However, it also will affect how you are viewed by your students...and possibly the quality and quantity of work they turn in to you.

The school where I teach does not allow visible tattoos. My advice would be to cover it up where at work and avoid problems.

i teach 1st grade and i have tattoos from my legs to my neck (im covered!). i wear a collared shirt and tie everyday. we are in the business of educating young minds and being a business, there is protocol. if we are to consider ourselves to be professionals we need to maintain a professional appearance. there is nothing wrong with tattoos but they are not professional. would you want your lawyer defending you in a case to have visible tattoos? of course not
