What are my chances of becoming a firefighter if i get convicted with a misdemeanor ?
Asked by joey777
What are my chances of becoming a firefighter if i get convicted for possession of stolen property? If i did it would be the only thing that would show up on my record. Even before i turned 18 my record was completely clean. I live in Los Angeles and really want to be a firefighter. I'm 18 years old. I'm willing to take all the courses i need and go to school however long i need to but what if i do all that for nothing?

Only a felony will prevent you from becoming a firefighter. I've posted the Los Angeles Fire Department website. There's a ton of info and a toll free number for you to call. Good Luck and Bless You

Drop by your local station and talk to the chief. I'm an ex volunteer firefighter and I can tell you they are human. With age comes wisdom and any good chief knows that. The important thing is your heart and your brain, that's what the chief needs behind a nozzle on the end of a hose. Just be honest with whoever you talk with. Honesty is a huge requirement in the fire service. And thank you for your service in advance! Good luck and God's speed!

You won't be carrying any firearms, and if you didn't commit a firearms offense or assault you'll be fine. The decision will be based on department bylaws. If attempting to enter a career fire academy you won't have an issue, but if looking to join a volunteer squad you might. Most volunteer squads don't want anybody who is a troublemaker, but as it was stated before stop in and talk to a chief officer. If they see you're decent now and are willing to learn they'll accept you. Departments are hurting everywhere and need all the help they can get.
