How do I keep from being nervous during a typing test?
Asked by Dani
I have a typing test for a job a week from saturday. When Im by myself, I can type 90-100 wpm with no problem. When I'm nervous or someone is standing over me, my speed drops dramatically, and I start messing up like crazy. Also, Once i get used to a keyboard, I get messed up on other keyboards until I get used to them. I dont want to blow this test, how can I calm down, and keep from messing up on the typing test? Its not an interview, anyone who applies for the job can sign up to take the test, but I'd still like to do well.

Submersion. Keep taking the "test" or at least re-enact those conditions which would make you nervous. After awhile, your body will be used to the conditions and it will not mess you up with the fight/flight reaction. This is how soldiers are trained to kill, they keep practicing shooting targets that look like people. They get yelled at, hear gun shots and grenades going off. This recreates the environment to alleviate the body's physiological response. The best way to get better is practice. In this sense, have someone stand over you, distract you, and purposefully make you nervous. After awhile, it will become immaterial.

Have a good rest. Don't think too much about the test. When doing the test, learn to relax and pretend that you're alone.

Just remember, it doesn't mean a damned thing. You gonna die, suffer or starve by failing a typing test. Nope.

Well, I type about 90WPM with an average of 1 or less errors. Usually, on average, you only need to be able to type 40WPM to pass a typing test. I would guess that even at your most nervous, you still do better than that! You should be allowed to spend five minutes typing before the test to familiarize yourself with the new keyboard. Just take a deep breath and pretend that you're not being tested. Warm up your hands and make sure they're nice and loose and it will cut down on shaking. Good luck!

During a typing test no one will be standing over you. You be able to do practice to warm up before you are timed. This is all done on a computer, by yourself. Just relax, no one is going to beat you if you don't type 100 wpm, like one of the other answers, you are only required to type 40 wpm to pass a tying test. Just relax, you will do well. Good luck
