Sweetie Pie
To all the auto body painters out there.........click here!!?
Asked by Sweetie Pie
I am a sophomore in college and am still VERY undecided about my major. I was thinking of taking off for a year and going to vocational to learn how to do auto body painting/welding. (It only takes a year at my school). And then maybe by then I will have my mind made up as to what I what I want to major in.. I've never welded before but have painted several pieces of scrap metal and thought it was fun. Anyway, I was wondering if any of you actually like what you do, or do you just see this as a job to go to everyday. Is it fun? Do you just do it on the side, or as a living? I am very interested in this.

I do this as a side job. But I only do custom jobs. Like graphics, art work and that sort of things. Your right, it can be very enjoyable. Thats not a bad idea about going to the school, and trying to make up your mind. The only downfall to that is getting in sort of a rut. Lets say your making a little money painting cars. You rent an apt. or buy a house. Then your stuck with a bill that is only payable if you work full time. Thats good if you want to keep painting cars for a living, but if you want to go back to school, you have stop working full time, and your not able to pay your bills(rent, utilities insurance car notes) that sort of thing. I have seen alot of my friends get an "ok" and now they have bills stacked up and they're not able to finish the school they started. They were in the same situation your in. So they usually end up with a mediocre job. My advise is to think real hard about what you want to do with your life. I woulndn't quit school just to paint cars. You will thank your self in a few years if you tuff it out and finish. Good Luck
