How do I become a film director?
Asked by Dr Fernando
I'm a high school freshman. I'm going to be a film director but I'd like to know what I can do now to help me get there. There are no photography or media arts classes availiable at my school until senior year. I take a theatre workshop class now (I'm not sure if that helps). What can I do outside of school to get started? Also, are there any good filmmaking books that you know of?

Make your own films, try to see if there are photography classes through your city. See if there is a local theater group that you can film their plays for them (to get the experience). Research at your local library what is happening in the film industry - new equipment, film, new technology. You will have to go through school and then plan on spending time "paying your dues" in the film industry. Being a gopher, somebody's assistant. what ever it takes to get your foot in the door and then try to become an assistant somewhere so you can learn on the job knowledge. A lot of the success in hollywood is who you know, so you'll have to spend a lot of time networking. And be prepared to do grunt work for a while until you get established.

You should just practice filming and that will get you where you want to be. Good question though.

Pure talent might not be enough.
Get good qualifications. NYU film degree will give you an advantage.
Usually, people hang on to their day job and make short independent films to get noticed. Eg. Sam Raimi, Edward Burns. Participate in film competitions (and win), invest in a good video camera. Know more people in the film industry, that's how Quentin Tarantino started. Start writing a script and persuade friends to star in it for free. And don't even think about doing pornography.
