When you are a supervisor, aren't you supposed to set boundaries with your subordinates?
Asked by justjoan
I see supervisors going to lunch regularly only with certain people like they are one of the gang and taking walks only with certain people. This doesn't seem right. As a supervisor, aren't you supposed to set boundaries to as to avoid the very appearance of impropriety or playing favorites?

Yes, you are supposed too. But there is a very fine line and gray area there. If there is impropriety, playing of favorites, anythings that can be seen as discrimination or harassment, then it must be reported. It can be brought to their attention if it is causing a problem, then if things do not change, then go over their head to their supervisor. But be careful also, make sure you document events when they happen, to cover yourself. Also watch out for backstabbers, and things backfiring on you. Make very sure of things before reporting them, and if you have witnesses, people on your side, then go for it. But be careful. Another source is your Employee assistance program if you have one where you work, things such as reporting can be done confidentially.

it depends on your line of buisness

Supervisors are allowed to socialize, most companies encourage lunches, etc, it builds report and loyalty. Also, business can, and does, get conducted over lunches or "out for a walk". If the environment offers little for privacy walking might be the supervisors way of providing leadership to their employees. Personally I think it would be weird to have a boss that did not associate with employees.
