Career advice...?
Asked by ryanmcc84
I've been in retail management for several years now. I would really love to get out of retail, but I'm just not sure where to turn. I've had plenty of jobs in the past and there were always things about each job that I liked. I did retail...nice to not have the boring Mond-Fri job....
I've done Janitorial work, cleaning floors...i did my job no and no one bothered me, but the pay wasn't all that great, and there's no presige.
I've worked at a bank....i got to wear suits, the pay wasn;t bad, and theres a little prestige in that, but i can't sit behind a desk all day
I've done medical billing....i did my job and no one was on my case...but i can't sit behind a desk all day.
I've worked constuction....loved it..working with my hands, being outside, building something....i can't stand cold weather!...and there wasn;t much prestige.
I just got my real estate license, but i can't rely on that..especially when starting out...but i am really excited about it.
What havn't i thought of to do?

Best Answer:
retail recruitment consultant.
You'll have the luxury of doing mon-fri 9-5
You'll know lots about employing/finding the right candidates for retail roles.
You can get out and about and meet clients and candidates so your not just stuck at a desk all day.
If you do well, the cash is great!
good luck

Work outdoors as a park ranger. No one to bother you. You're not in one place all day long like behind a desk. There's prestige. You move around.

No one can help you make that decision except you. Most likely you know yourself the best or can understand yourself the best if you make an effort.
Now, read on...
What about retailing really makes you like it?
Instead of identifying and focusing on all the things you disliked about all the jobs you have had till date, spend time to identify things that you liked most about all the jobs you have had till date.
Next it will be worthwhile for you to look around and think about the jobs that your friends or people in your family have and list the things that you really like about those jobs (i.e. why you like any of those job/s).
It will also be a good idea for you to identify what is important to you - money, safety, thrill, prestige etc... and don't think short term - tie it to your dreams, desires and hopes.
Looking at all this information holistically (as a whole) will help you identify your passions and see what really drives you and motivates you. Knowledge is half the battle - execution is the other half. Now that you know what you want to do, figure out a way how to do it and do it.
