Can one state licensed Physical Therapist work in a different state?
Asked by shyne s
Do every state have it's own license? Can one license work in different states? How many times do PT's have to take the board exam during their entire career? And do every state have a different board exam? If I graduate from an APTA accredited DPT program in Maryland, will I be able to work in California?

Everyone takes the same exam...however, your license is regulated by whichever state you origionally applied for. If you submitted your scores for licensure in Maryland, you would need to apply for reciprocity in California...usually a fee and you must request your transcripts and exam scores are sent to the California review board. Once they approve your license, you can work in California. The process can range from 1-2 months to up to a year. You can go to the federation of state boards of PT at: https://www.fsbpt.net/pt/ However, when you take your exam, you can apply for licensure in CA if that is where you plan to move to.
