Wow cool I love this question because it is exactly the same thing I am going through well looking for. From my search and opinion I would say look for the jobs that are looking for entry level employees because they are more willing to teach you what skills that you may not have already. But when talking about skills in entry level they want you to know the basics. Like computer knowledge including but no more than MS Office, Excel, Power Point, MS Outlook ( An internal email system), and basic Windows applications plus good organization skills. In this type of environment you are not required to know the switchboard phone systems at first in most entry level positions but it would help to have the bare minimum down. Also I had a fun time for 2 hours just looking at hotjobs on yahoo this morning and I found alot of good leads today!!! I could give you an essay but I thought that I would only give you a long paragraph on what I am doing. Also me personally I have about 3 years of Administrative experience but the only thing that keeps me back is the fact that my experience came under the label of security so I am going to level my resume to make them see the experience verses the job title. So I am praying and I hope all the good towards you sweety GOOD LUCK!!!
Hotjobs.com And you local internet search of the classifieds is a big help!!!

If by "clerical" you mean administrative assistant, they generally look for fast typing skills (more than 40 wpm), organizational ability, good customer service skills and computer skills with Microsoft Word and Excel (sometimes Access and PowerPoint too). An Associate's or Bachelor's degree also helps too.
