I am thinking of starting a trucking company. What do I need to offer to make drivers want to work for me?
Asked by fingers
I know there are a ton of huge companies looking for drivers. What would I need to offer drivers to keep a small fleet of 5 to 10 trucks running regional. What I want is for drivers to want to work for me. That way I can avoid the high turnover that plauges the industry. I am not trying to get rich, just provitable.

My husband, dad, stepmom and many family members are drivers. One thing you should offer is running legal for one, on time paychecks, good pay (not 21 cents a mile) respect, and well maintained equipment are just a start. Listen to your drivers. They are out there not you. If you have been a driver for a company think on the things they did that you did not like and don't do them. One thing that I have seen is lack of respect for the drivers while they are working. that and running legal is a biggy. the ticket is not yours its the drivers and it could ruin the career faster than anything. Make your office an open door. It is not just the driver you are working with. Its the family too. They should be comfortable contacting you. If the family don't like you the driver will not stay long. After all this industry is not a nine to five don't care about home life. It is a big family and we have to try to keep an open line of communication. If you want to really find out. go to a truck stop and just sit in the drivers lounge or restaurant and listen to the drivers. dont really ask just listen and see what the drivers say. I was lucky and was able to travel with my husband for a number of years while our daughter was young. It was nice to make his job a family affair. Like I stated earlier. keep the family happy keep the driver happy, get a better job out of driver. good luck and hope to see you out there. keep the dirty side down
been a truckers daughter all my life and now a wife gotta love it

First and foremost would be a decent salary, good benifits, including dental, vision and health. paid vacation and or bonus incentives. If you treat your employees like family they will also treat you well Also they key word is respect, respect given is respect recieved. I wish you well in this venture.... You didn't say where you were from.. but good luck to you !

You would be leasing on Independent Owner Operators to haul for you. You need to build a reputation for prompt pay to the driver after completion of transaction. Quick pay is the differientiator. Be prepared to prove it with testimonials from your current drivers. Respect their time. When you promise them loads...you need to deliver.
