I don't think so and if they do, you can take them to court.

In CA, which is an "at will" state, you can be fired for any reason at any time.
That scenario doesn't sound like a good reason for you to get fired.

Call your state's dept of labor (or employment) and get an answer. It's a good question.
TO SexyTrojan - EVERY state is an "at will" state. All that means is that there are no employment guarantees for anyone. People (you, too) still have protections in the workplace and protections concerning treatment of their employment by their employers. Yes, it's easy for a company to create a legal reason to fire you - but if it's JUST you and not a mass layoff, they have to document that reason. Can't just say adios.

Yes, you COULD be fired for it. Unless Target is looking to shed deadwood, you probably won't be. Firing and replacing an employee is an expensive and inefficient process. Most large employers don't take it lightly. You'd have to give them a more directly compelling reason to fire you, like poor job performance. The additional justification of having a shoplifting child might push them over the edge.
Take a proactive role in providing restitution to the store, and demonstrate that you're taking control of the situation and reining in your child's behavior, at least with regards to shoplifting at Target, and I can't see any reason why they would fire you.

No, legally they can't fire you for his actions. Document anything that is said to you that would even give you that impression.
