How much work is required for one to become a pharmacist?
Asked by 12Grey14
I want to become a pharmacist and I have been doing great in academics (straight A student with the exception of geometry). I heard that Rugters Pharmaceutical is one of the hardest place to get into and I want to know how can I achieve to become a pharmacist.

Take all of the advanced courses you can in high school such as Advanced Chemistry, Advanced Biology, Physics, and Calculus. Also work on your written and public speaking stills (writing and speech classes). Start looking at pharmacy schools your junior year and examine their requirements. Some schools will be easier to get into than others. Some schools have easier requirements for students that did their pre-pharmacy courses within the same institution. This is a big plus when you're worried about getting in! As a pre-pharmacy student, consider working very part time as a pharmacy technician in retail, hospital, or long term care pharmacies. There you will meet pharmacists that can serve as your mentors, and you'll become very familiar with the duties and responsibilities of being a pharmacist.
I've been a retail pharmacist for 7 years.

A lot of work is involved but it's very achievable. You need to have a strong background in Chemistry. Take all the advanced chem courses you can during high school and make sure to do well in them. You'll also need to improve that math grade because math is a huge part of Chemistry (not so much in geometry but I would still try to raise that grade) Try shadowing a pharmacist or better yet, see if you can get a job in a pharmacy stocking shelves or something so you can get first hand experience. When applying to college you'll want to have some good references from pharmacists that you have worked with or shadowed.
