What specific skills/education are essential to become a successful plant operator in an oil refinery?

In the past year I've met several people who work at either local refineries or offshore rigs, and have on several occasions mentioned that I look into obtaining a process tech cert. and degree to become a plant operator. I've actually become quite serious about this and would appreciate any advice/info in this area. I guess I'm trying to figure out what all I can and have to do, to excel in this, not only as a female but as someone who is completely new to this. I'm 22, female and live in Houston, TX.
