What is the best way to prepare for a career in drafting?
Asked by nhale24
I have taken AutoCad in college but what other courses should I take? Should I take ProE or Solidworks, and what should I look for in a college or trade school? Thanks for any help

Both ProE and Solidworks are excellent programs to learn. ProE is less common, but the pay will be slightly higher. I'd check local job postings where you want to work to see if there is enough of a demand for it. Otherwise Solidworks is very similar and very common.
I'd suggest getting an associate's in engineering, and maybe a certificate in drafting but make sure you are really good with two programs; one 2-D and one 3-D. That way you can go into either electrical drafting or mechanical drafting. Employers are getting far more picky now about who they hire for drafters so it's hard to get in as a drafter. Have you thought about going the full way and getting a BS in Engineering? I would recommend it to make sure you have a steady job future. However, you can always start with an associate's. If you don't have to work while in school, try getting a drafting internship. That will build up your skills and should help you get a full time drafting position once you finish with your schooling. Good luck!

ProE is good PDS if they offer it. Solidworks would be great. Depends on what field you want to get into. i got a degree in arch/civil. but i took some structural classes. a Mechanical Electrical Plumbing class, some surveying classes. i would say look for a college and make sure your credits would transfer if later on you decide to go to school and get a higher education.
