How do bilingual people get more benefits?

Many jobs offer more working opportunities for people that are bilingual or sometimes they get payed more. Why? Where can I find statistics for this?

It's because if the company hires one bilingual person, they won't have to hire two people...one for each language...and can then afford to give the one person more money and/or benefits. I've noticed, though, that some companies don't pay THAT much more money for a bi- or tri-lingual person. It depends on where you live, also. I live in the DC metropolitan area where there is a LOT of diversity. The more world languages one knows, the more money-making potential they'll have, especially since these people are the ones who can be used in different departments and can move up quickly. It never hurts to learn another language if you'd like to have one of those bilingual jobs. Unfortuantely, i don't have stats for you. I just know from talking to my friends and from getting paid $2 more an hour at one job for knowing some Spanish. Good luck! =)
