How do you become a bartender?
Asked by mountie218
A friend of mine suggested that I look into becoming a bartender. This seems like a good job for me because I am so friendly with everyone. How do I do this? Do I need to get any training? PS--I live in Chicago, IL, in case that makes a difference.

some state may require a mixology certificate...or something like that.....but I'm from SC and I cut my teeth in bar-tending at Henry's on the Market "oldest restaurant in Charleston". I started as a hostess and was promoted to bar-tending...it's a people person job! Lots of fun, lots of money! If you are at the right bar. Easy job, unless your in the weeds! as they say... The owner of any establishment would be able to tell you if you need any certifications for your state... Probably not... Mixology training is good, if you know nothing...OJT is great...just go to another bar and ask the bartender if you can be their bar-back for free!...you'll probably get tipped because good bartenders always tip their waitresses and bar-backs.. just hang out and watch for a few weekends.. Also good mixology books are available at your local library. I made a list of all the popular drinks made at that bar and memorized them...but I would if in doubt just ask my customers how they liked their mixed drinks prepared...and they appreciate that. They appreciate it more when you prepare it as the liked it when they return with out asking! Talk about getting good tip money! Show skills come next, rent cocktail the movie with Tom Cruise...to see what I mean!

You could always apply to a bar as a bar-back. This person is an assistant to the bartender. You would learn valuable on-the-job training this way. There are also many Bartending Schools (www.abcbartending.com) that you could attend to learn how to makes some of the more complicated drinks.

1st Training then Experience then Seniority Good Luck!! Most difficult job to land in the service industry next to head chef...or if you are female, good looking with great assets, that usually gets you in the door pretty quickly.

Do not go to bartending school huge waist of time- Somehow get your foot in the door of a good place and work your way up and learn its the best way- Also it is a lot of natural talent so good luck- And also you neede to lie to who ever and tell them you have experience! Never say you are new at it-
