How to become a licensed carpenter?

My boyfriend is a framer and has been doing so for about 6 months in a family business. He love the work, but would like to get licensed so that he can change companies if he wants to some day in the future. How would he go about doing this?

if there is a union locally, he might be able to test there. as far as i know there is no such thing as a liscensed carpenter. ive been in const for 27 yrs. to go to another co, all he needs is experiance. 6 mos. wuold put him as a helper unless he is an extremly fast learner.
