I had the BEST housekeeping business for 10 years and loved it!!! I worked only in the most affluent homes in Bay Area (near San Francisco) and worked solo. Before starting I would recommend learning about different cleaning techniques for different surfaces (never use amonia on marble, never mix amonia and chloring bleach or you will gas yourself, what cleanser to use on Corian, Formica, etc...). This knowledge will get you hired on over other housekeepers. Yes ask questions...Pets, # of people living there (the more, the dirtier!!), will someone be home and if not get an office # in emergency, if kids will be home just you and them, special rules....are any members of house hold allergic to any certain chemicles, (REALLLLLY important!), any areas to be left alone, do they have home insurance in case of damage or injury.... I was able to make a LOT of money, because I learned about my clients and addressed special needs. Later on I could afford to be picky about who and where I worked for. ONE MORE IMPORTANT THING:::::: if you are going to be self employed (not affiliated with an agency) you need to keep real accurate books on your earnings and expenditures to pay taxes as self employed. DONT work under the table like I did for a bit...it wont count toward retirement/social security!!! I hope you have fun, be really honest and ask before snacking (my clients all gave me an "open fridge" perk). PLEASE contact me via email if you have ANY questions or just to let me know how ya do....Desiree

A detailed list of what they expect from you, including what chores or tasks need to be taken care of, and how often; any errands they expect from you; if child care is part of the duties? Also, Detail what types of cleaners are preferred, find out if there are any allergies in the household that you should be aware of (dust or to cleaning products), how to handle pets, if they are present. Monetary compensation, and what the compensation would, or should, be if you do more (or less) than is outlined. And stipulate that changes may be made to the contract in writing once agreed upon by both parties.
