Is truck driving a good career?
Asked by dillharvey
I am 36 years old and have a 12 year old daughter, I have a class B cdl already and have drove a dumptruck for almost a year. I cant seem to get a good job. I was wondering if I go to truck driver school and get my class A is there a good chance of getting a local driving job so I can be home everyday or would I have to drive 48 stste for a year? Any good advise would be greatly appreciated.

Truck driving as a career, that is a big leap of faith right now. Fuel prices are unreal and everyone wants to cut freight costs. It is really hard to get a surcharge out of any shipper. But tell me one job that is not feeling the gas bug crunch! You can find local jobs in most major cites, it is always easier if you have a clean CDL, class A is always better. A lot of the trucking schools can help you in job placement.Fed-x, DHL, UPS and Walmart are a few of the local business that you may try. Bigger trucking industries like JB Hunt are always looking for good drivers (but with most of these you need a class A CDL). Truck driving is a good way to make a living locally or over the road. You may have to go over the road for a while and work your way into a local haul. Not all companies are tagged for running all 48 states. Do your homework, use the Internet look for trucking companies that run in your area, see what their qualifications are for drivers. One perk to over the road driving is some companies will allow you to take your daughter with you on a trip. That is a lot of fun and you will have memories that will last forever. Good luck! A trucking company is always looking for a good driver!
