Is truck driving a good career?
Asked by dillharvey
I am 36 years old and have a 12 year old daughter, I have a class B cdl already and have drove a dumptruck for almost a year. I cant seem to get a good job. I was wondering if I go to truck driver school and get my class A is there a good chance of getting a local driving job so I can be home everyday or would I have to drive 48 stste for a year? Any good advise would be greatly appreciated.

It really depends on where you live but long haul drivers make the most money but you'll not be home for at least 4 days out of every week. It's not too hard to find a company that will provide you with routes close to home so you can be home every night but you'll still not get to spend much time at home and with a 12 year old daughter it's not a good idea as you'll still not be able to spend much time with her. You should still go to school and get a class A but you'll need to go to work for company like a local retail distributor so you can have a regular route you run every day and you'll get home at a decent time every evening, be able to spend a lot of time with your daughter, and you'll make better money.
But if you just really need the money right now then get a class A and take long hauls thru mountainous country like north carolina, west virginia, colorado, etc,. you'll make a lot more money doing that because the majority of people do not want to. Long hauls to Florida, Texas, ect dosn't pay as much because it's all flat land and really easy to drive. The worst the driving conditions and terrain the more money you'll make. Hope I helped.
