Is truck driving a good career?
Asked by dillharvey
I am 36 years old and have a 12 year old daughter, I have a class B cdl already and have drove a dumptruck for almost a year. I cant seem to get a good job. I was wondering if I go to truck driver school and get my class A is there a good chance of getting a local driving job so I can be home everyday or would I have to drive 48 stste for a year? Any good advise would be greatly appreciated.

There's no money in any industry that's been around as long as that, if that is what you mean, you'll likely end up driving long haul and still be hating life, no offense.
May I suggest finding ways of living within your means, perhaps setting up a budget would help... Then you can keep your current job, have spare money, and all is good.
You may think income has to exceed expenses, except that is a human fault of the mind because income is not the problem, see, I used to think like that is how I know, expenses are the problem.
Curb not the expenses, and no amount of income is enough.
I've watched local drivers earning 20k / year with this same problem, they were talking how life was so much easier when they earned close to 100k / year doing long haul. But a closer review showed that even when they earned 100k, they still never had any money at the end of the month.
Learn to live within your income, and life gets better.
I've made it on 12k / year before, it can be done.
Society would have us believe otherwise, but it is a corporate lie, they want you and me to be always broke so we are dependent on them (and skru'd) because they hate it when someone makes it because then you become more IN-dependent and that puts us in a position that makes them feel uncomfortable.
Yeah, they're always hiring...
Translation: The pay SUX!
Lies, lies, and more lies.
In the end the balance of the equation is not in how much you earn, it's in how much you can manage not to spend. Beyond that, it gets even better when your earnings exceed your expenses and you can start saving, borrowing money with their interest rates and loan payments are more of their lies, becoming free of these financial nags is the step to financial freedom.

Went to one of those school to take the course, and got it. After I got the license, there are numerous job offers. Mostly, like what you're thinking, out of state driving.
But, there should be some that is within the state or specific city driving job out there.
What you could do is ask the school if they have job placement, or atleast job posting board.
Many employer post their hiring flyers on the board at school.
That's how they could find drivers easily.
Another thing is to look through your local newspaper, ads, or emplyment opporunities magazine.
Call those number up to see if they hire local drivng, just to get an idea on how likely it is to find one after you've got your license. If many employers are looking for local, then it should be okay to take the course.
Some of those employer will even pay the class for you.
One local driving you can see around is the gasoline tanker.
My friend works at a gas station and seem to always say that they hiring drivers.
