How much should I pay a babysitter?
Asked by momstheword78
I live in New England & am looking to hire a babysitter from a group of teenagers I direct at a local theater. My son is 10 & VERY easy to manage. Very independent. He usually plays video games, on the computer, or outside so he does not require a lot of maintenance. I would hire someone for 10-15 hours per week plus give that person free voice lessons per week which I usually charge $30 for. I'm looking for people to give me an idea of what you think a good amount to pay the babysitter is then (not including the free lessons). The kids I'm choosing from are mostly 16 years old but most of them don't have a license. Ok babysitters & parents, if you could give me feedback, I'd appreciate it! Hope this was enough info.

From what you wrote about your son, I would suggest 5-10 dollars per hour. Try giving them a lower amount of money, first and then if they seem reliable and your son likes them, you should give them a raise or so. Or you can simply ask them about how much money they are willing to pay. If they give a reasonable amount, just go with that.
Babysitted a couple of times with friends.

I would pay them about $5 an hour (at least) and then give a tip. I have been both a babysitter and a parent paying a babysitter and even though you are paying for someone to make sure your child stays safe, you are really paying them for their time so having an easy to care for child will not make the price cheaper. They have set aside this time for you so you need to make it worth their time or they won't babysit for you again. If you find a good sitter then definitely take good care of him/her financially so they will be eager to return. Good sitters are very hard to find so you definitely want to reward one when you do. If you are looking for a weekly sitter to do the same hours each week then you can probably come to some sort of flat fee agreement that will save you money.

Right now the going rate in our area for kids to come to your house and babysit is $2.50/Hr. (for work schedule) If you are going out and late home .. ususally is more like $4.00/Hr.
(that is for one child, more if there is more kids)
It is hard to find a good one, so keep her happy and she will make herself available to you when you need her. Even at the last minute!
