How much money (on average) does a high school teacher make?
Asked by chem3324
How much per year does a high school teacher make. Lets say for example an English teacher. What's their income, can it increase, and is it a good way of life?
almost forgot, would a science teacher make any more of less than a history or english teacher?

According to the American Federation of Teachers, the average beginning teacher salary in the 2004-05 school year was $31,753, up 3.1 percent from the previous year. It was $31,704 in the 2003–04 school year.
The AFT teacher salary survey for the 2004-05 school year found that the average teacher salary was $47,602, a 2.2 percent increase from the previous year.
According to the Dept of Labor, you make more money if you get a higher degree if you're a public school teacher. You'd better do it because you really love it, since the pay doesn't increase at a great rate, though strides are being made.
Now if you become a community college instructor, it matters what your degree is in. I work at a community college, and medical, computer, science and math instructors make tons more money than english, history, or psychology instructors, but you usually have to have a masters degree in a regular sized city (small towns will accept a bachelors, but they also can't pay as well).
Good luck!

Teachers dont make more depending on their subject. They make more if they hold higher degrees/more experience. In depressed areas, starting salaries might be as low as $25,000 a year. Average around here in Southwest VA is around $30,000 or so. You won't get rich in money teaching, but if you are a good teacher, you will certainly be rewarded by your experiences.

When I first taught (high school) it paid a little over 11K in 1981 now it's about 200% more! I was an English teacher and whether or not, some are paid more than others - no - all are paid according to a scale (usually according to degree & years of service) set by their union. There may be certain incentives though. I had to be an assistant coach to get extra money.
