What's the best position to apply for in a hospital while attending school?
Asked by trinellipe
I have decided to return to school to become a Registered Nurse. I already have a BA in English and I have experience as a Pharmacy technician. I will need to work in order to get myself through school again and was thinking of perhaps working in a hospital. Is this a good idea or not?

You have the same level of thinking as I do. I have a BA in Business and am looking to go back to school for a career in the medical area (x-ray tech, respiratory therapist or dental hygienist). I would think the getting a CNA would be a good idea, some nursing programs require you to have one anyway. Another idea would be a patient registration position. If someone needs to go the the ER at 2:30am- bam they would need you. Other possibilities might be in the areas of dietary aides, or janitors- but I would personally go with the CNA or patient registration things myself. Good Luck.

yea usually the janitors have flexible hours.

I am in nrsing school as well. If you are truly wanting to become an RN, there are 2 positions that you might find good for the experience purposes of what you are doing. 1. Nurse technician or nurses assistant. These are the people who help the nurses. They do everything from changing bed pans to checking blood pressure. They pretty much do everything the nurse does except give the meds. This is excellent experience for what you are trying to do. 2. Host or Orderly. These are usually the people that take you from a-b in the hospital. Every hospital is different. Some have them where they work all over the hospital, while others have them only for sugery or other departments, such as CT or x-ray. This is the type of job where you are going to be doing a lot of heavy lifting ( like moving patients from a bed to a stretcher) and you will also be doing a lot of walking. My mom worked as a nurse tech for 4 years while she was in school and said it was the best experience in the world. It made her appreciate her nurse techs after she got her license. I worked as a host/orderly at the same hospital and it also provided tons of experience, as well as an excellent workout. I lost 50lbs doing that job! It was great! Those are some of my suggestions that I think would be helpful. Good luck in school!
