Can you be a regular police officer to go undercover for certain things?

I want to be a detective or an FBI agent but I don't want to start as a police officer to be a detective.

There have been people who go straight to a goverment agency (FBI, CIA, ATF) but it is hard and you need A LOT of schooling and training. Most people start as an officer in a department to get their feet wet so they can get the feel for the job. Why spend the $$ if and when you don't know if you will like it. As far as going "undercover", if you are talking about undercover work with detectives you will have to work your way up in a department (Police, Sheriff, State) to prove that you can handle it and most departments require you to take a test to get to this area to make sure you are both mentally competant and able to handle the stress. I have been through the academy and it is MUCH more difficult to jump into a goverment agency but it is possible. Hope this helps!!

You have to start at the bottom and work your way up. You can't just start at the top with no experience.

You aren't going to start at the top no matter what force you join, that's like saying you want to be in the army because you want to start as a Coronal. So get used to the idea you have to work your way up.
