Does going to work feel more like a prison sentence to you?

It used to, and I'd pull sickies as often as I thought I could get away with it, and going back after a holiday was worse than starting Autumn term at school, but then I thought to myself:
"You only live once, Psymon, and realistically you're not the brightest guy in the world, but you're reasonably intelligent and you're still just 40 years old, so get out and do something you enjoy more. Take a risk."
And that's what I did, and I set up a company in partnership with a friend of a mobile 'Fun Casino' as entertainment at corporate events and private parties. Now I look forward to going out on 'gig', and all the effort we put in is for our benefit only, and not for a conglomerate of rich share-holders who are only interested in increased profits and dividends.
Wow, I obviously needed to get that off my chest, I was just going to say:"I used to" and enigmatically leave it at that. You get a star for your subtle personal counselling.

I'm giving you a star to make you feel better and also for the fact that you touched on the same feeling I have everyday I trudge in here. My main reason to work is to support my bunnies. Seems like a vast majority of ppl hate their job but only do it since they have to. Congrats to those who actually like their work.

Yes, it most certainly does. I hate it and can't belive I may have to do this for the next 40 years of my life! Am looking around but any job I might be interested in involves taking a huge pay cut and jepodising my mortgage payments. It's swings and roundabouts really.

Sounds like you need to find a new job. Seriously, you spend a good chunk of your time at work, so you need something that will stimulate your mind, make you happy, keep you interested. It is a long life if you hate what you are doing. Good Luck!

LOL I don't know if you're grumpy, but perhaps you're in the wrong job. I had factory jobs that felt that way. Fortunately, I was able to work my way through nursing school and loved my work. In the 80's, I worked as a nurse on a neurology floor in a hospital and used to look forward to going to work. It was interesting and the crew I worked with were wonderful.
If you feel this way more than just occasionally, it's time to do some thinking about career changes. Good luck.

it is the same thing if your mind is not free. we are under the illusion that we are free, we will not reach our greatest capabilities under these false pretenses.

I certantly felt like it was a prison sentence, when I started working in beginning of 1990. I did manual labour at first. It was hard, unsatisfactory, borring work. So I went back to school. Now, I feel I am out of prison and I am persuing a carrear that I am interested in.
It is never too late to do something you like, is my motto.

well yeah maybe but people needs to work all our lives in order to live. we can't do anything about it...it is tiring of course but this is just the way it is...piece of advice, just think of how soon is your payday then think of your plans in spending it..it might serve as an inspiration..good luck_c",)

Yes it does, because I hate my job but not nearly as much as I hate some of the dribbling cretins that I have to deal with on a daily basis.
Roll on 5 years time when I can retire and get away from it all.

I have felt like this in some of my positions. It means that you are in the wrong job..could be that you are burnt out or have learned enough...could be that you are surrounded by people that are negative. You have choices: stay and suffer, or use all of your sparetime to move on. Take a class, join clubs, volunteer, anything that will open your mind and put you in touch with others that are willing and able to teach you.
Apply for everything that is somewhat of interest, if you decide--or they decide that it is not a good fit you have at least got experience to do a better interview. Good luck.

Depends on the type of work you are leaving for.
So if you are going for some interesting work, which you love to do then you will not feel boring and bad. If you are doing some as you duty or forcefully then it is like a prison sentence for you.
So it is about making your work interesting and attractive enough , so that you don’t feel bored .

oh no way are you grumpy, i HATE coming to work. I have not met anyone that HATES there job as much as i do. Im not generally a grumpy person and my friends call me the life and soul of the party as i always tend to get home the next afternoon (i go all the after parties). You would never say it at work though. I dont talk to anyone cause they all annoy me (for no reason) i dont want to make friends with them, i work to work and start grunting when i see the building. I F---ING hate it and cant express it enough. I have never felt this strong about anything before and i dont even know why, i think i made it a mind set now and its become a self fullfilling prophecy... (ive contplated killing myself) this place brings out the worse in me. Sorry for going on and on i just needed someone to listen... :)

Some days...
If it's just today, you might be tired or not feeling well, or bored with today's tasks. If it happens every day, maybe it's time for a new job.
Good luck to you.

Jobs are paid slavery, or a sentance, you want money, you have to do TIME. I watch all the people going into the corp. buildings with all the suit cases, from the weekend leave of absence. Moving back to work for the week.
Fortunately I am working out of that rat race, if you want options I can share with you if it don't take to much time. Just respond with your email and I will try to help.
I don't try to hard to help people because I find that most people suddenly think their situation is not so bad when someone offers them a solution. Quite pathetic but true.

At least you have a job.
I sit ALL day infront of the computer applying for jobs, and the bar-stuards don't even have the curtisy (sp) to reply back and tell me that I've been turned down. I just have to wait and see if I get a reply or not.
Add to the fact that my rent is due, I'm pretty darned desperate!
Maybe this will change your perspective today?

Your right it is a prison sentence and I get to start when I want and finish when I want (theoretically) being my own boss, but then I have the hassle of employing 7 people, cashflow, profit margins etc.
