I'm 33 years old and working as a Receptionist.Am I too old to work my way up to being an executive Secretary?
Asked by sanantoniotxchic
I am a bilingual receptionist and a very good worker. I do more than what I should do to help the attorneys. I have been working for this company for one year and I 'm only getting paid $8 an hour. I feel I deserve a raise, but I can't find a way on how to ask for it. HELP!!

You're not too old to 'work your way up', but you may need to go elsewhere to do it. How likely is it that there will be an opening in your firm in the near future? Inquire about that and if you can't be told anything definitive, you may want to consider beginning to look elsewhere.

Maybe you can point to certain projects you've done, or positive feedback you've had, or things you've helped to do that were above & beyond your normal duties?

You're not too old to work your way up. As far as asking, put together a list of all the good things you do and how important your contributions are to the organization. When you meet with your boss, tell him all these things and ask for a raise. If you don't ask, you won't get it. Too many employers will take advantage of employees who don't stand up for themselves. Good luck and go get 'em!

Absolutely not. My mother-in-law was an executive secretary in her 50's because she was good at what she did. Go for it.

Good lord I hope not. My mother-in-law didn't start back to work until she was divorced at 30+ years of age. Today (last month) at 65 she was just informed that she was going to be the Executive Administrative Assistant to the new CFO in her company. She is going from $50k to more than $75k at the end of her career. She has decided to push off retirement for another five years so Social Security is based on your income for the last five years you work. No, it's not too late.

Not only should you ask for a raise with your acheivements to back them up but you should also start looking for another job. Try recruiters. They may be able to help get you that EA job your looking for. Also, do you have computer skills? Make sure you know word, excel, powerpoint. These are skills that EAs should have. Take some classes and get certified if you don't. If you get offered another job for more money you can go back to your employer and let them know and ask them to match it.

You are certainly far from old!
Besides there is no such thing as too old for anything!
I say just sit down with the Boss and ask for the raise, but have a list of your reasons for deserving the raise.

It is NOT too late! You do deserve a raise. I would suggest that you make a list of all of the reasons you feel you deserve it and go right in and ask. Just don't make the reasons have to do with you needing more money because your bills are higher. It needs to be because you have earned it or are willing to take on more responsibility. Give yourself a selftalk before you go in and the worst you could get is no and then maybe it is time to look for somewhere else.
