first, you need to possess an extreme love for donuts then, you must be able to grow a "sam elliot" mustache then, you must be able to walk with both arms held out wide from your hips for long periods of time-to make room for that huge gun (whether you are on duty or off) you must also be able to sit in an air-conditioned car for hours on end parked next to your fellow cop buddies talking about whose gun is bigger you must have the ability to fall in love with the cute single waitress at the local diner... ...and not have your wife find out! also, you must be able to fill out endless crossword puzzles while sitting at the local diner flirting with your waitress fling while you pretend to do "paperwork" you must be able to run red lights whenever you feel like it, whether there is an emergency or not, just because you can You need to carry a toothpick with you at all times to hang out of the side of your mouth so you look more intimidating you should look very intimidating wearing aviator sunglasses. Wide brimmed felt hat-optional but probably the most important of all, you must respond to every single suspicious activity call you get that is in your home neighborhood so you can run inside and catch a few minutes of the game. LOL--really, you must enroll in and pass Police Academy. Good luck.
