changing how I am perceived professionally?
Asked by jay_smith213
I work in the plant operations department for our local hospital, I am a maintenance man. I have been going to school to work on computers and have years of education to back it up, but it dosent help. I have interviewed in our computer department over 10 times but they cant see past the maintenance man. How do I change their perception of me? I am well groomed and act friendly and professional 24/7. I asked the manager of the IT department why he wont hire me and he said he dosent know how the other staff will accept a man they see plunging toilets and changing lights is now working on their computers. I even wear a suit and tie to the interviews, but he sees me in my maintenance uniform all of the time. Black denum pants and a grey shirt. Even my supervisor has given me a great reference. What can I do?

Although you would like to stay within the same company, they have stereotyped you.
That answer from the manager told me that you need to apply to a new company that will view your mechanical experience as a maintenance man and your education as a plus for a customer service engineer. Try your local IBM - they appreciate that with their point of sale engineers.

Since your supervisor is behind you in this endeavor, I would talk to him about what the IT manager said. If I were you, I would tell my supervisor how much I enjoy working for this company, but that I might have to consider leaving if I can't get the opportunity to use my education.
BTW, the IT manager might be guilty of unfair hiring practices if your qualifications are right for the position and he won't consider you.
