What is the average salary for a teacher?

I am interested in becoming a teacher in the future, and am curious as to how much they actually earn. Do private school teachers earn more than public school teachers? Do some teachers earn more because they are in a richer district? Please state your sources. It would be really great if you are an acutual teacher.

As you can see there a is a wide variation in salaries. A lot depends on where you work. Private school teachers usually earn less. The "rich district/"poor" district inequity does exist in some places, especially in states where large portions of school funding come from local property taxes. Other states attempt to even things out by awarding state aid. Most public schools pay teachers according to a salary schedule. Advancement on that schedule may be made by longevity and by earning advanced degrees.

my neighbor is a 2nd grade teacher
Teachers in this school district start in low 30's while teachers in some neighboring districts start from mid 20's to mid 30's. Depends on the district and the tax base of the district. Local teachers get around $700. extra per year of experience. Also they are paid more for masters and beyond. Coach's make mid 50's if the also teach.
You can look at the school web site in your area to see a salary schedule. Teachers at church or parochial schools earn less but seem to like their working conditions better.

It depends in the district you want to work at and the education you have. In Tx for example bilingual teachers earn more than regular teacher. With no experience and a BS or BA your starting salary is of $42 000 a year, around $3500 a month.
