Usually, an EMT-Basic doesn't just drive the ambulance, they also participate in patient care...they ride in the back with non-emergency patients (transferring patient from hospital to nursing home, dialysis, doctor's appointments, etc), while the paramedic drives. On 911 calls, the paramedic rides in the back, while the EMT-Basic drives, but that doesn't stop the EMT-Basic from helping out with patient care at the scene of the emergency. My EMT-Basic partner is expected to help out at the scene (as much as his scope of practice allows). He checks vitals, checks blood sugars, stabilizes fractures, bandages wounds, etc. The average shift is 12-24 hours long. It really depends on what company you wind up working for. I work 24 hours on/ 48 hours off. When there's "nothing going on", the EMTs and paramedics are expected to stock the ambulance, clean the ambulance, clean the base, work on paperwork, etc. It's rare that there's nothing to do. Hope this helps...
I'm a paramedic
