Talk to local teachers - often times they're in touch with stay at home moms who do work on the side. Also, volunteer at senior citizen homes and other places where caregivers might be - once you're hooked in, you can inquire there.

Generally I would recommend going through an agency as they will have vetted the candidates. Otherwise, you can advertise or ask health care professionals you work with who may know some options.
