Which do you think is the better job: a Librarian or a High School English Teacher?
Asked by walfor222
I am considering these two jobs, but not only these two, I know that everyone can say 'depends on the person' and that's true, but what would you personally say is more enjoyable, and which is less stressful, ect?

The decision to choose a better job depends on personal criteria. Personality , job satisfaction , financial benefit and social status would be the considerable factor to choose the better job. Personality: What type of person do you think you are? If you are an extrovert person , if you like to talk , if you like to share ideas with people and you are confident about your intelligence , you should go for teaching profession. On the other hand if you are an introvert person , you like quietness and you like discipline and you like to stay with books , you should go for a librarian . Job satisfaction: For teaching you can evaluate your success very easily when you appreciated by your students . Moreover every teacher enjoy long long holiday every single year. Which would increase your job satisfaction. But for librarian you may have very limited opportunity to get job satisfaction . Financial benefit: I don't have clear idea about financial benefit of a teacher or a librarian. But I hope a teacher would have more financial benefit for regular salary and a teacher can utilize his holidays for extra income . Social status: To me a teacher is more respectable than a librarian. So I tried to share my view about the option to choose your profession .

Oh, be the librarian, everyone loves the librarian. I wish I'd been a librarian, it didn't seem exciting enough all those years ago,but now I think it would be the perfect job. I love books, love to recommend books and wish I could spend my days there.

Depends. Do you like quiet and calm and being alone a lot? Or do you like to be in the middle of a bunch of smart a** teenagers who think you know nothing? Personally, you couldn't pay me enough to be ANY kind of teacher. Librarian, definitely.

A librarian!! A librarian!! You don't have to deal with kids with attitude problems, or the faculty beaurocracy that comes with the job, just the library beaurocracy. Librarians are the funnest people, greatest senses of humour. I miss my library job.

An English teacher gets to help mold future great people who can later lead. A librarian gets to tell people to hush and turn off that cell phone. doodad

We need teachers, and God love them for the work they do, but I'd have to say it would be far less stressful to be a librarian. If you like to work with kids you can be a children's librarian.

A:
I would go with the librarian position, because you can still help children learn and eliminate the stress of dealing with inequality in education.

A:
To be a librarian is less stressful and you can learn more from books. To be a high school English teacher is more interesting and you can learn more not just from books, especially when you communicate with students.

I recommend a librarian because high school kids are just plain mean and hard to deal with. Most of them think that they are always right and are big headed. Less stressful and more enjoyable is by far a librarian. Good Luck on your job hunting.

high school inglish teacher because you always meet new students and you can really get to like some or dislike some but all of this doesnt give you time to get bored. and on the other hand not many people like to read so your just going to be sitting on the chair all day with like 5 to 10 people wanting help finding or checking out a book.

Both are stressful! Librarian is less stressful, yet earning potential is only 1/3 of that of an English teacher. One can not live on a librarians wage alone! Both teaching English and being a librarian are rewarding. I know! Be an English teacher, retire after 30 years and then become a librarian???

A:
If you like kids and teaching, then be a teacher. If you like dealing with the public, but feel more inclined to keep records and organize exhibits, be a librarian. If you really can't decide between the two - pick the librarian. All the teachers I know are disgusted with the "no child left behind" policy. Some have even left the proffession because of it. You'd still get to interact with the munchkins but not have all the stress that has been foisted upon teachers.

Librarian, you will still be able to enjoy the interaction with others and make more money. People often think that a librarian's job is boring and isolated, however that is truly not the case they often work with outreach programs, instruct computer classes, etc. I have no idea where some of the people live that have posted above me, but here in Charlotte, NC. The starting pay for a librarian is 8k to 10k more than that of the staring pay for a teacher with a BA in education. Just do some research. Look for jobs at your county library and your public school system and compare the job descriptions as well as the salaries. HTH GOOD LUCK!

I can tell you which I think is better, but that won't mean that you will find it better. There are rewards to both jobs. You will have to deal with people, and sometimes unpleasant people, of all age groups. Talk to an employment counsellor about taking an interest and aptitude test. Do some information interviews with people in those careers (2 - 3 of each). See if they will allow you to "shadow" them for a day, or part of a day, so you can see the types of things they have to deal with.
