I work as a security officer, what is wrong with that?
Asked by robert f
I have BA in mathematics and I want to be an actuary. I have been working as a security officer for the past 2years ever since I graduated from college. I come up $100 - $200 above my head everymonth... I noticed the employees have little respect for a security officer. The only people where I work who respect security officers are the security team and the executives in high paying positions. It does not bother me because I am happy to get paid to sit, but why do the regular employees never talk with me? Just wondering.

They equate your position with that of a janitor or other menial employees. I manage a security company and this is a common attitude until you are called on to do your job and save someone or something from danger. Even then they forget very quickly ...

People like to feel better about themselves by putting others down. It doesn't matter if you're infinitely more intelligent than them, have more common sense, etc. Don't worry, they're just trying to ease their insecurities by looking down on someone...it's not personal.

Just coz of the glass ceiling 'class system' that exists in our society. To put it bluntly, they think they are better than you coz they think they;re work is more important than yours. I worked for IBM. was the same there if im honest. They're lame. keep doing what u enjoy!

A job is a job. If this job suits you don't be up set. It isn't your position to be overly friendly with other employees or them with you.

It may be the stigma, policemen have the same problem, for some reason there are these melon heads that think the ones that keep the peace are the enemy. I think every job is important except for porn stars or pimping or the like. Keep your head high and don't worry about a few, they would notice if you weren't there.

You have a BA in math and work as a security officer? Why don't you find a job commensurate with your education? It would probably pay better.

I have a great deal of respect for security guards. I have worked in jobs where security was very necessary. Sure, most people see them sitting on their butts, but it takes a well-trained quick-thinking person to rise to the challenge when they are needed. They are lucky to have people like you around.

There is nothing wrong with working as a security officer. Some people have a problem with anyone in authority and some security officers are not very professional and give the whole industry a bad image.
