What is the reality of working on a off shore oil rig, I understand it hard work for 12 hours a day but what?
Asked by JALISCO
about the rest of it, are the riggs well kept and clean/ is the food good quality and safe to eat/ are the companys mindfull of your saftey and are the choppers that fly the guys out to work are they safe of junk machines/ what about the places for sleeping and the shower and clean up areas are they respectable or like a pig pin truck stop, and last, whats the real amount $$ that a maintenance man or floor hand could make each week working for a company like EXXON or CHEVRON /PENN- ROD drilling , iv'e heard so many different things from my friends that i would like to hear the truth from someone who really works on a rig and how it is on home life with the wife and kids, thanks so much and have a nice day.

Ok
The rest of it depends on where in the world you work. I am currently working in Angola and although some of the rigs there are brand new and accomodation etc is clean and nice, food is normally terrible. There are other rigs there where i never want to go on again cos they are dirty, too many people in a room, nothing to do, food is even worse than other rigs so sometimes it is just luck. I have been on a rig in Norway which was stunning. The rooms were well kept, food was awesome, there was lobster, crap etc on menu most days, internet cafe's for people to get on their emails, telephones in every room where you can call home.
The working away from home life is hard no matter what the rig is like, but the time you get at home is second to none. If i am home for 1 month then i am with my family everyday and with my wife all the time, it is great and the money is better than i could make working in an office or workshop here is Scotland.
